About Monnow Valley
Monnow Valley is one mile of right bank on the lower Monnow, a few miles upstream of Monmouth. The Passport describes a secluded stretch, mostly a good mixture of riffles and pools, with fly fishing for the trout that give the river its reputation as one of the area’s finest. The mayfly hatches can be spectacular, so dry fly fishing is good in late spring and early summer. The water also holds coarse species, including chub and grayling, and the best of the coarse fishing is towards the downstream end, where the river is slower and deeper.
The banks are quite overgrown in places, so getting to the river can be difficult, especially in summer. The bed is mostly gravel and wading is relatively easy, but there are deep sections where you will need to get back onto the bank. The Passport advises chest waders with studded soles.
It is fly fishing only for trout, and all species are catch and release. Spinning and lure fishing are not allowed for any species. Dogs are not allowed. A river trout day ticket costs £24, with up to three tickets a day, and a winter grayling ticket is also sold. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
