About Skenfrith
Skenfrith is just under a mile of double bank trout and grayling fishing on the Monnow, seven or eight miles upstream of Monmouth. The Passport describes it as some of the most sought after trout and grayling fishing in the Wye catchment. Abundant fly life, including good mayfly hatches, and a steady flow make it prime dry fly water. Brown trout are the main quarry, a mixture of wild fish and fish stocked by neighbouring angling clubs, and grayling are present along with the occasional large chub, so the fishery can give fly fishing all year round.
Wading is necessary to get the best out of the fishing but is about as easy as it gets in the Wye catchment, the bed being a mixture of silt and gravel. Chest waders are recommended for some of the deeper pools, though most of the beat can be fished in thigh waders. From 1 May half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing allowed from 5pm. The Bell at Skenfrith, an inn, is at the upstream limit of the fishery.
It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are allowed if kept under control. A river trout day ticket costs £24, with up to two tickets a day, and a winter grayling ticket is also sold. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
