About River Eden (Gwynedd), Lower Beat
The Afon Eden is a tributary of the Afon Mawddach, running mainly south from Trawsfynydd to Y Ganllwyd, where it joins the Mawddach. It draws its water from the Rhinogydd catchment and is a spate river strewn with boulders. The upper beat runs through a raised peat bog, which gives the water a slight tea coloured stain, and the river quickens towards the lower beat. The Passport says the pools and glides hold brown trout, usually small, with a chance of a fish of half to three quarters of a pound, and that a run of sea trout and salmon arrives towards the end of the season.
The lower beat is a rocky section with nice riffles and some deep pools. Trees make casting difficult. Wading is not allowed: the Passport says the river has the highest density of freshwater pearl mussels found in Europe, and the river is small enough that wading is not needed. It is fly fishing only, one trout may be taken per rod, there is no night fishing or overnight camping, and dogs are not allowed. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
