About Afon Gwyrfai, Betws Garmon to Waunfawr
The Afon Gwyrfai is one of the three rivers fished by the Seiont, Gwyrfai and Llyfni Fishing Society. The society describes it as a beautiful wild river, designated a Special Area of Conservation under the European Habitats Directive and left in its natural state, so that fly fishing and spinning can be a real challenge. Worm fishing is popular and good catches can be had in the right water conditions.
The societyโs rivers page does not say where its stretch starts and ends. The Cwellyn Arms at Rhyd Ddu, which sells the societyโs permits, describes the fishing between Betws Garmon and Waunfawr: open flats at Betws Garmon, then fast, deep water with islands and trees, where wet and dry fly can take rising trout. It calls the Gwyrfai a summer river on which sea trout and salmon can be caught up to the end of the season. The position shown is approximate.
The societyโs licence page gives its river trout season as 3 March to 30 September and its river salmon season as 1 April to 17 October. Current prices are on that page.
