About fly fishing in Neath Port Talbot
Fly fishing in Neath Port Talbot is river fishing, on small valley rivers that run south from the hills to the coast. Of the 4 waters we list, 1 is on the Afan, 1 is on the Neath, 1 is on the Afon Twrch and 1 is on the Upper Clydach. The Afan and the Neath hold brown trout, sea trout (sewin) and salmon, and the Twrch and the Clydach are trout water. No stillwater is listed. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
The Afan is a small, steep spate river that runs through the Afan Valley to the sea at Port Talbot. It was badly polluted by the coal and iron industries and has recovered, and the club describes a salmon run that keeps growing. Afan Valley Angling and Conservation Club, founded in 1951, has the fishing from the Afandale pool at Cymmer down to 20 yards above Mansel Weir at Green Park Industrial Estate in Aberafan. There is no fishing on the Corrwg or Gwynfi sections. The Passport sells a 24 hour ticket at £25 and a weekly ticket at £40, up to two tickets a day. Brown trout fishing runs from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Night fishing is permitted for salmon and sea trout, and the club says it needs the Natural Resources Wales migratory fish permit. Sewin come in from May and most anglers target them, with the bulk of the run in midsummer.
The Neath runs about 19 miles from Pontneddfechan down the Vale of Neath. Glynneath and District Angling Association has 17 miles of it in the upper valley, much of it in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The association describes gin clear water with natural brown trout, stocked regularly through the season to supplement them on the lower waters. Salmon and sewin runs start from the end of July or the beginning of August, depending on water, with a smaller run of both in spring. An adult day licence for anyone over sixteen is £15, bought online through the Fishing Passport. No dogs are allowed and the beat operates a wash-off policy.
The Afon Twrch is the main tributary of the Tawe, meeting it at Ystalyfera. Twrch Beat 1 is about three quarters of a mile of double bank, fly only, with every fish returned. The Passport describes a good head of fish, topped up by periodic stocking, with March Brown and Large Dark Olive hatches in the afternoons of March, April and May, and the Blue Winged Olive in the evenings of summer. It is club water, so exclusivity cannot be guaranteed. No dogs, no night fishing and no overnight camping. Our listing shows no price, so check the Passport page.
The Upper Clydach is a small Tawe tributary that runs down through Cwmdu Glen to meet the Tawe at Pontardawe. Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society fishes it from the confluence up through the glen, and the club’s page gives no length. A day permit is £10, from H R Jones in Clydach or online through the Passport. The club’s page prints no year, so confirm the price. You need one rod, all salmon go back, brown trout under 25cm go back, and only two brown trout may be kept in 24 hours.
For a first visit, the Twrch suits a fly angler who wants a quiet afternoon, and the Neath at Glynneath is the longest stretch to explore. The Afan is the one to book for a night for sewin.

Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Neath Port Talbot
The map above plots Neath Port Talbot's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the Afon Twrch (Tawe) rises near Black Mountain, Powys, and the River Afan rises near Northern slopes of Mynydd Llangeinwyr, east of Blaengwynfi. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Neath Port Talbot
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Neath Port Talbot's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
