About Edw Aberedw
The Edw is an upper Wye tributary and, the Passport says, has been one of the most popular trout streams in its scheme, with four beats and around five miles of water. The lower two beats are high gradient and flow quickly over bedrock, a fairly difficult wade with some fine pools and glides, while the upper two run through farmland and are more leisurely and meandering. Aberedw is the furthest downstream, split into two sections that make up nearly 1¾ miles of mostly double bank. Flowing over bedrock, it is true mountain stream fishing: tricky wading in places, but a variety of water and good numbers of wild brown trout that give a great scrap on light tackle. The Passport suggests a rod of six and a half to eight feet rated 2 to 4 weight.
It is fly fishing only, the limit is two trout per rod, and any trout under 9 inches must be returned. Dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit. The stream holds native white-clawed crayfish, so waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing.
