About Edw Cregrina
The Edw is an upper Wye tributary and, the Passport says, has been one of the most popular trout streams in its scheme, with four beats and around five miles of water. The lower two beats are high gradient and flow quickly over bedrock, a fairly difficult wade with some fine pools and glides, while the upper two run through farmland and are more leisurely and meandering. The Cregrina beat is just over 1½ miles of double and single bank, ending at the bridge that marks the start of the Hundred House fishing. Halfway up, the Edw changes character: the first half mile flows over bedrock, with rocky pools and fast water, and upstream of Cregrina it is slower, with the look of a lowland stream. It is quite tricky to wade in places. The Passport suggests a rod of six and a half to eight feet rated 2 to 4 weight.
It is fly fishing only with barbless hooks, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit. The stream holds native white-clawed crayfish, so waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing.
