About Edw Hergest
The Edw is an upper Wye tributary and, the Passport says, has been one of the most popular trout streams in its scheme, with four beats and around five miles of water. The lower two beats are high gradient and flow quickly over bedrock, a fairly difficult wade with some fine pools and glides, while the upper two run through farmland and are more leisurely and meandering. The Hergest beat is a one mile stretch of double bank that ends at Hergest Falls, which in high water is one of the great places to see ascending salmon and trout in November and early December. The beat flows over rock and gravel and offers classic upland stream trout fishing. The Passport suggests a rod of six and a half to eight feet rated 2 to 4 weight.
It is fly fishing only, the limit is two trout per rod, and any trout under 9 inches must be returned. Dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit. The stream holds native white-clawed crayfish, so waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing.
