About the River Mimram
The River Mimram is a chalk stream of about 19 kilometres, or roughly 12 miles, in Hertfordshire. It rises from a spring north west of Whitwell, where watercress beds fed by the same springs have been worked since Roman times, and runs to join the River Lea at Hertford.
The valley above the spring is dry for most of the year, though in very wet years the river has been known to extend several miles upstream. Below Whitwell the river passes Kimpton Mill, where the Kym joins it, then Codicote Bottom, through the middle of Welwyn, between the two Digswell settlements and across Panshanger Park to Hertford.
It is a small river with a reputation for very clear water and good fishing for both brown trout and grayling. Environment Agency surveys have shown wild fish of both species. Like many chalk streams in the area it has suffered from low flows and silt, and silted gravel in places is unsuitable for trout to spawn on, so the wildlife trust is working with farmers and landowners to restore it. The Mimram rewards a quiet approach and a light touch.
