About fly fishing in Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire’s river fly fishing on FishingBeats is members’ water, and we list only part of the county. The Mimram and the Old River Lea at Amwell are fished by clubs that take new members from a waiting list, and the Rib by a club whose water is for members only. The day ticket fishing is on stillwaters, so that is where a visitor will usually fish.
Tringford Reservoir at Tring is 26 acres, fly only with barbless hooks, fed by a chalk stream and springs, and it is the only part of the Tring Reservoirs fished for trout. A day ticket is £40 with a boat included, booked in advance by phone. You may keep 1 rainbow trout, and every brown trout goes back. Night fishing is not allowed. Season tickets are £520 for 34 visits and £370 for 17 in 2026.
Rib Valley’s Millennium Lake, near Ware, is about five acres, stocked with rainbows mainly around 2lb. A fly ticket is £30 and includes 1 fish killed, with extra fish killed at £12 each. There is no spinning. Fly fishing is usually suspended in early summer because the water is too warm, and from mid May to the end of September the lake is open to any method. Check the fishery’s news page for when fly fishing restarts.
The clubs do not sell day tickets. Panshanger Anglers fish three lakes and about half a mile of the Mimram in Panshanger Park, and joining means completing the application form on its website, which puts you on the waiting list. Amwell Magna Fishery’s own history puts its water at two miles of the Old River Lea between Ware and Stanstead Abbotts, with enquiries by email to the club secretary through its website. Boxmoor Trout Fishery is a three acre lake at Hemel Hempstead run for members and shareholders, with limited membership and a tour by appointment with the membership secretary. Latchford Fly Fishers have a 3 acre lake and fishing on the Rib between Latchford and Standon fords, for members only.
It suits an angler after a day on a Hertfordshire trout lake, or one ready to join a club and wait for a place on the river.

Fish species in Hertfordshire
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Hertfordshire
The map above plots Hertfordshire's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Lea rises near Well Head, Leagrave Common, Luton, and the River Mimram rises near Spring north west of Whitwell, North Hertfordshire. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
