About the River Rhondda

The River Rhondda, Afon Rhondda in Welsh, has two main branches, the Rhondda Fawr and the Rhondda Fach, the big and the little Rhondda, though both are of similar length. The Rhondda Fawr rises at a spring on the eastern side of Craig y Llyn at about 544 metres, drops sharply through a mountain gorge and then runs down the Rhondda Valley through Treherbert, Treorchy, Tonypandy and Porth. The Rhondda Fach rises on the hills above Blaenrhondda, flows through Maerdy and Ferndale and joins it at Porth. The river then runs on through Trehafod to meet the Taff at Pontypridd.
