About Raby Estate
The Raby Estate beat is about ten miles of fly only fishing on the north bank of the Upper Tees, with a good variety of water, in the stretch that includes the falls of Low Force and High Force. The lower end at Dent Bank is described as an ideal place to catch salmon from mid-August onwards, fishing well after rain just as the river starts to drop. Salmon fishing runs from Dent Bank up to the impassable High Force waterfall, and there is no fishing at Low Force or High Force.
The page calls the brown trout fishing exceptional, especially at the two sections at Cronkley Bridge and Widdybank, and from there up to the upper limit at Cauldron Snout. The fish up there are not big, but they scrap and are noted for their dark colour from the peat tinted water, and a catch return of 30 fish a day is not uncommon. Wading can be tricky in places, with the lower section more manageable, and a wading staff is advised. From Cronkley Bridge to the upper limit it is wadable but hard work, and many areas can be fished from the bank. Parking points are on the beat map, which is issued on booking, and getting to the water usually takes a small walk.
The page recommends traditional north country spiders, large bushy dry flies and large stoneflies, with streamers also a noted method, on a 9ft or 9ft 6in rod rated 4 or 5 to handle the permanent downstream wind. For salmon it suggests a 10ft 7 weight or a 12ft or 13ft double handed rod, with dark red shrimp patterns on low water doubles or copper tubes.
There is a limit of three fish per rod, dogs are not allowed, and the beat is not covered by the wash-off policy. Additional club rules apply, and the page asks you to read them before buying. Up to twenty tickets are sold a day. The salmon day ticket costs £25, and the river trout and winter grayling day tickets £12 each. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
