About Barnard Castle
The Barnard Castle Angling Club beat is about three miles of single and double bank in and around the market town of Barnard Castle on the Tees, for brown trout, grayling and salmon. The Passport describes runs, riffles, deep holding pools, shelves and cascading water, with six named salmon pools. The best of the fishing is said to be at the upper limit above the town, and downstream of the town from the caravan park to Abbey Bridge. Below Abbey Bridge is a gorge, so real caution is needed getting in and out, and in the middle of the town you need to watch for shelves. Wading is simple in many places, but extreme caution is needed below Abbey Bridge and in the middle of the town, and a wading staff is highly advisable.
It is fly water for trout, grayling and salmon in a spate, and worm fishing is allowed for trout, but no maggots. The page recommends traditional north country spiders, dry flies, up or down stream nymphing and streamers, on a 9ft or 9ft 6in rod rated 4 or 5 for trout, and for salmon a 10ft 7 weight or a 12ft or 13ft double handed rod, with dark red shrimp patterns on low water doubles, or copper tubes and coneheads. Parking is available at several points, shown on the beat map.
The ticket also covers 480 metres of the River Greta at Bowes, which the page says is rarely fished. There is a limit of four fish per rod, with mandatory catch and release dates for salmon, no spinning for trout is allowed, dogs are not allowed, and club rules apply, which the page asks you to read before buying. Up to ten tickets are sold a day. The salmon day ticket costs £15 and the trout day ticket £10, with a weekly ticket at £40 for salmon and £30 for trout, and a winter grayling day ticket at £8. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
