About River Clwyd, Ruthin to Pont Perfa
This is the club’s upper River Clwyd water, from Ruthin Park and Pont Eyarth down through Pont Telpyn and Pont Llanychan to Pont Perfa. Above Ruthin the Clwyd is a small stream of runs and pools holding wild brown trout, and the club says sea trout have been caught above the Pont Eyarth stretch as early as June and July. The stretch from Pont Llanychan to Pont Telpyn is described as the best trout fly water on the upper river, with fast runs into deep pools, and the club suggests a 7ft 4 or 5 weight rod. From Pont Perfa to Pont Llanychan the river is mostly tree lined with some deep pools and shallow runs and riffles. From August sea trout also hold in the deeper pools.
Near Ruthin the beat includes the junction of the Clwyd with the Dŵr Ial stream, a remodelled fish pass by the sewage works and the deep Holy Moses pools below the waterfall. The town stretches are close to the park and can be busy. The club’s pages do not give coordinates, so the position shown is approximate.
