About the River Conwy
The River Conwy, Afon Conwy in Welsh, is a river in north Wales of about 34 miles. It rises on the Migneint moor, where a number of small streams flow into Llyn Conwy, and runs generally north, taking in the Machno and the Afon Lledr before it reaches Betws-y-Coed, where the Llugwy joins it. From there it flows through Llanrwst, Trefriw and Dolgarrog to Conwy Bay at the town of Conwy. On spring tides it is tidal as far as Tan-lan, near Llanrwst.
The upper catchment sits on acid rock and the water is often stained brown, while the valley below Betws-y-Coed is wide and fertile. The river falls in cascades through the Conwy Falls and the Lledr Gorge, and an artificial fish pass built in the 1990s lets migratory fish reach the water above the falls.
The Conwy is noted for its salmon and sea trout (sewin). Sea trout fish best in July and August, salmon run from the summer, and wild brown trout are in the river too.
