About Aberbaiden
Aberbaiden is 1,200 yards (just under ¾ mile) of right bank on the middle Usk, a few miles upstream of Abergavenny. It offers salmon fishing in high and medium flows and sits in a part of the Usk that the Passport says is renowned for its wild brown trout. The river flows over gravel and shale, so wading is easy underfoot though deep in places, and a wading staff is recommended. The Top Pool is rated the best of the fishing for both salmon and trout. Some of the bank is steep, with overhanging trees.
There is a long walk from the parking area to the river, about 505 metres (552 yards). The opposite bank is fished by Merthyr Angling Alliance, so there may be other anglers on the water, and the house keeps two rods, which are rarely fished, so exclusivity cannot be guaranteed. From 1 May half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing allowed from 5pm.
Every booking has to be agreed by the fishery owner before it is accepted, and an answer can take 48 hours or more. This beat can only be booked by contacting the Fishing Passport: you can see the available dates online, but the booking is not made on the website.
It is fly fishing only and all species are catch and release. Dogs are allowed if kept under control. A salmon day ticket costs £34 and a river trout day ticket £24, with up to two tickets a day.
