About Penpont
Penpont is about 1½ miles of mostly double bank on the Usk, a few miles above Brecon, and gives wild brown trout fishing. As is usual on the Usk the fishing is better early in the season, with April, May and June the most productive months, though rain at the height of summer can improve the chances a lot, and falling temperatures make September a good time to try. Penpont also produces the occasional sewin and salmon, with the best chances late in the season with a bit of water. The Passport says the beat suits the stealthy angler; it is generally fishable throughout its length and has a mixture of pocket water and dry fly flats.
During school holidays, bank holidays and hot days you may meet other river users: guests from the estate may be at Penpont bridge and there is a campsite at the bottom end of the fishery. Four rods are available each day, two through the Wye and Usk Foundation and two through the house, though either can book all four, so a booking of one, two or three rods does not guarantee you the water to yourself. From 1 May half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing allowed from 5pm.
It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. A salmon day ticket and a river trout day ticket each cost £29, with up to four tickets a day. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
