About Ashford House
Ashford House is about a mile of right bank on the Usk below Talybont Bridge. The Passport notes some history: John Henderson, who invented many Usk fly patterns, moved to Ashford House in the 1930s and owned the fishery for many years. There are some pools with salmon lies, among them the Chain Pool and the Blue Pool, but the beat is better known as a wild trout fishery. It has good fly hatches typical of the Usk and a good variety of pools, runs and riffles, so it suits several methods, and trout over two pounds can be caught.
The banks are quite overgrown and steep in places, so getting to the river can be difficult in the height of summer; it is easiest at the top and bottom of the beat. Parking is around 200 metres from the river. From 1 May half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing allowed from 5pm.
It is fly fishing only for trout, one trout may be taken per rod, and salmon are catch and release at all times. Dogs are allowed if kept under control. A salmon day ticket costs £44 and a river trout day ticket £34, with up to four tickets a day. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
