About Buckland
Buckland is about a mile of single bank on the Usk just off the A40 between Crickhowell and Brecon, near Bwlch and Talybont. The Passport calls it one of the most beautiful beats on the river, with peaceful fishing conditions, several fly hatches typical of the Usk and a good variety of pools, and says kingfishers, sand martins, wagtails and sandpipers can be seen. It has three named salmon pools, Ashford Bend, Beech Pool and Bridge Pool; salmon have also been caught in Wood Pool, which has eroded slightly in recent years. Many pools can be fished from the bank and wading is relatively easy with due care. Stud or felt soles are recommended.
The trout fishing is best early in the season, from March to June, with good dry fly and wet fly sport on the prolific hatches. As summer goes on early morning becomes more productive, with chances late into the evening, and the day time fishing improves again in September. Parking is close to the river, about 100 metres from the top of the beat, reached along a farm track: a 4x4 is ideal and a low slung vehicle needs care. You can also park at the farm and walk about 20 minutes. The gate is open from 8am and locked at 8pm, so leave before 8pm. Sheep and cattle sometimes graze the fields beside the beat.
Only one rod is available on Thursdays and Fridays, when a family guest reserves the right to fish. It is fly fishing only for trout, two trout may be taken per rod, and salmon are catch and release at all times. Dogs are not allowed. A salmon day ticket costs £49 and a river trout day ticket £39, with up to four tickets a day. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
