About Abernant
Abernant is just under a mile of mostly left bank on the upper Wye, a few miles downstream of Builth Wells. The Passport names two high water salmon pools, Lady Alexander’s Catch and Abernant Stream, and says the Edw Pool and Stone Catch are well worth a cast too. The beat also holds good numbers of trout and grayling.
The riverbed is mostly gravel, so wading is relatively easy for an upper Wye beat, though the Stone Catch and Edw Pool are boulders and bedrock and difficult in places. Chest waders are needed to get the best from the fishing, and stud or stud and felt soles are mandatory. It is a 200 metre walk from the parking spot to the middle of the beat. The owner reserves the right to fish too, so exclusivity cannot be guaranteed.
Salmon are catch and release at all times, trout fishing is fly only, and the limit is two fish (trout and grayling). Dogs are allowed if kept under control. Up to three tickets are sold a day, and a trout day ticket costs £25. Half price evening tickets can be bought from 1 May, after 1pm on the day, with fishing from 5pm. Junior tickets are for ages 12 to 17 and must be bought by an adult. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
