About Craig Llyn
Craig Llyn is a mile and a bit of the upper Wye, double bank for most of its length, about two miles south of Rhayader and ten miles north of Builth Wells. It has several named salmon pools and fishing for trout and grayling through the year, with riffles, deep pools and pocket water, and some dry flats towards the lower end. The upstream end has classic pocket water with plunge pools.
Salmon anglers can bank fish most of the pools with a single or small double handed rod, but wading is needed to cover the bigger ones and some are very deep, so felt and studded soles are recommended. There are three parking spaces, two close to the river and one a 328 yard walk away. The owners reserve the right to fish, so exclusivity cannot be guaranteed. They live locally and offer a guiding service across their beats on the upper Wye and its tributaries, arranged through the Fishing Passport. A guide can only work the beat if they book a rod for themselves as well as for the clients.
It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. Up to four tickets are sold a day. A salmon day ticket costs £38 and a trout day ticket £27. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
