About Cadora Backs
Cadora Backs is about half a mile of left bank on the lower Wye, midway between Wyesham and Bigsweir. It is a low water beat that fishes best when the Redbrook gauge reads 1 metre or less, and ideally between 0.5 and 0.7 metres. The Passport says that above 1 metre the fish are mostly passing through, with a chance of one pausing in the Alders Pool or on the flat above Cadora, while below 1 metre there are usually a fair number of residents, and in low water the beat can hold a good stock of fish along its whole length. It includes the fly run at the head of Cadora pool.
The riverbed is mostly large rocks, and wading is difficult and unnecessary except to get onto Bakers Crib. Apart from Cadora Stream the beat is not classic fly water, though the fish respond well to the fly if the water is clear enough. In dry weather a 4x4 can be driven along the length of the fishery, and day tickets have the use of a small hut with cooking facilities.
The fishery is let to one rod at a time, who may bring guests: one other salmon angler and one coarse angler. In season the guest coarse angler may fish the top half of the fishery, which is double bank. Salmon are catch and release at all times and dogs are allowed if kept under control. A salmon day ticket costs £50, for one ticket a day. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
