About Glan-y-Cafn
Glan-y-Cafn is two thirds of a mile of mostly double bank on the Usk, just upstream of Abergavenny, set in scenery framed by the Sugar Loaf and Blorenge mountains. The Passport says it offers good salmon prospects for one angler, though medium to high water is needed for the best chances. A 160 metre walkway runs alongside one of the pools just downstream from the parking area, the pool the beat is named after; in low water it may be easier to wade that section.
The beat is probably better known for its trout fishing. The streamy water at the top and around the islands suits daytime trout fishing, especially during the spring olive hatches, while the extensive glide that forms the lower half fishes particularly well in spring, on summer evenings, or whenever there is a hatch of fly. The riverbed is mostly gravel, and the Passport says the beat is good for those who want easier fishing. A public footpath runs along the opposite bank for much of the fishery. Parking is less than 50 metres from the river. From 1 May half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing allowed from 5pm. Block booking is available.
Trout fishing is fly only, two trout may be taken per rod and anything under 9 inches must be returned, and salmon are catch and release at all times. Dogs are allowed if kept under control. A river trout day ticket costs £26 and a salmon day ticket is also sold, with up to four tickets a day. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
