About Ty Mawr
Ty Mawr is the furthest upstream of the Wye fishing, a couple of miles upstream of Llangurig, and a beat of a mile or more over a mostly gravel riverbed where wading is relatively easy. It holds trout and grayling of a decent average size, wild brown trout being the main quarry. With little tree cover the river has more of a highland character and offers sparse cover when the wind is up, and in low dry conditions the water is crystal clear, so stealth is needed at the pools. It is often the first part of the catchment to become fishable after a flood.
The Passport suggests a rod of seven and a half to eight and a half feet rated 2 to 5 weight. It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
