About Ty Newydd
Ty Newydd is about a mile and a quarter of mostly double bank on the main Wye, some seven miles downstream of Builth Wells near the village of Erwood. The Passport calls it a beautiful section of the upper Wye with excellent fly fishing for salmon, trout and grayling along its length, and says that despite some quality pools it is relatively under fished for salmon. The river is about 70 yards wide here and suits expert and less experienced fly fishers alike.
If you wade, felt or studded soles are an absolute must, and the Passport recommends a wading staff, a wading belt and a life preserver. There are boards in places, but both sets of planks are in disrepair and should not be used. The beat has its own off road, gated parking with a walk of about 200 yards to the downstream end. There is no public right of way along it, so it is quiet, with kingfishers and the occasional otter.
Salmon are catch and release at all times, with fly fishing, and spinning when the byelaws allow, and no bait. Trout and grayling are fly only, and the limit is two fish (trout and grayling). Dogs are allowed if kept under control. Up to five tickets are sold a day, and a trout day ticket costs £24. A block booking can be made. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
