About the River Towy

The River Towy, Afon Tywi in Welsh, is one of the longest rivers flowing entirely within Wales, at about 75 miles. It rises on the lower slopes of Crug Gynan in the Cambrian Mountains and runs through the hills of the Tywi Forest, where it forms the boundary between Ceredigion and Powys. About six miles from its source the flow is held back by the Llyn Brianne reservoir, built in 1972 to store winter rain and release it in dry spells. Below the dam the river turns south west through Carmarthenshire, passing Llandovery and Llandeilo, and takes in the Cothi and the Gwili before it reaches Carmarthen and the sea in Carmarthen Bay.
