About River Dee, Bangor-on-Dee Village
The Village beat is the original water of Bangor-on-Dee Salmon Anglers, starting at the new road bridge above the village and running for about two miles, with the Ormrod’s water at the bottom ending at the Graig Cottages. The club holds both banks, bar a 300 yard stretch of left bank at Pylons that belongs to another club, but most fishing below the Old Bridge is done from the right bank, which is the bank visiting anglers fish.
It opens with the Church Pool, about 250 yards from the new bridge to the old, wide, slow and deep and best fished from the right bank, especially in high water. Below the Old Bridge the club names the Bridge Pool, where fishing from the bridge itself is not permitted, then Duke’s Pool, Pylons, the Monk’s Drain, Joby’s Pool, the Mud Flats, Cadbury’s and Plumley’s, which runs about 400 yards to the bottom of the beat. The tails and runs between the pools are described as good trout and grayling water, the faster water as good for sea trout, and the Church Pool and Plumley’s hold salmon and the odd pike. A footpath runs the length of the right bank, and because the beat lies on a loop of the river you can walk back to the village without retracing your steps.
Parking is in the village, with a further parking area off Graig Lane. Tickets are sold at The Middle Shop in Bangor-on-Dee, a couple of minutes’ walk from the top of the beat. The club’s 2025 tariff lists salmon at £20 a day and £70 a week and trout at £10 a day and £40 a week for visitors without a member. The position shown is approximate.
