About River Dee, Berwyn, middle section
This is the middle section of Llangollen Maelor Angling’s Dee water, running from the railway bridge past the Chain Bridge Hotel to the Horseshoe Falls. Canoe traffic makes the first stretch one for early morning or evening, and the club rates the water from the railway bridge up to the Chain Bridge Hotel as good for trout and grayling with fly or worm. Its slow, deep salmon pools from Ty Craig down to the sea trout pool fish well with spinner or bait, and the sea trout pool itself fishes well on higher water with fly or spinner.
Robbers Leap starts the Chain Bridge runs and is good on low water for fly, spinner or bait. From Kings Bridge to the Horseshoe Falls there is a deep, slow pool above the bridge that is hardly ever fished, and the Liverpool water is best fished from the canal side. Bishops Run is a salmon run for spinner or fly and also a good run for trout and grayling on the fly. From the Horseshoe Falls to Duncan’s Pool the club describes excellent trout and grayling fishing from both banks.
No fishing is allowed for 50 metres above the Falls on the A5 bank, or on the Ruthin road bank from the canal inlet to 50 metres above the Falls, and a byelaw prohibits fishing above the pumping station at Bishops Run. The club’s tariff lists a trout and grayling day ticket at £25 and adult membership at £110. The position shown is approximate.
