About Melyn Cildu
Melyn Cildu is just over a mile of mixed single and double bank on the River Irfon, in unspoilt rural countryside that the Passport says offers complete privacy and seclusion. It has a good mixture of pools, fast runs, gutters and flats, which suit a range of fly fishing techniques for the trout and grayling. The Passport calls the grayling fishing in this part of the Irfon excellent in quality and quantity, and the wild brown trout are usually of good average size.
Wading is relatively easy along most of the beat in normal flows, over a gravel bed, with a few trickier bedrock sections where more care is needed. There are two parking areas, each a 200 to 250 yard walk from the river. Professional instructors and guides can only work on the fishery if they book a rod for themselves in addition to their clients.
Fly fishing only for trout and grayling from March to October, and bait fishing for grayling from November to February. All species are catch and release, there is no night fishing or overnight camping, and dogs are not allowed. The trout day ticket costs £22 and the winter grayling day ticket £22, with up to three tickets a day. Waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
