About the River Irfon
The River Irfon, Afon Irfon in Welsh, rises on the upper slopes of Bryn Garw in the Cambrian Mountains, in the area known as the Desert of Wales. It runs through the Abergwesyn valley, past the Nant Irfon National Nature Reserve, and through Llanwrtyd Wells before it meets the Wye at Builth Wells. The upper reaches are a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The Irfon is a trout and grayling river. Grayling are present along it, and have been appearing more in the upper river. Chub live in the lower reaches, and salmon spawn in the autumn and winter, so anglers are asked not to wade through the gravels at that time.
The fishing is held by estates, a club and hotels, and some stretches are sold by the day.
