About River Elwy, St Asaph
This is the association’s lowest water on the River Elwy, a run of three connected beats at St Asaph: Gypsy Lane, Spring Gardens with Roe Park, and the City Beat. Gypsy Lane is a short distance from the tidal stretch, just upstream of the Junction Pool on the Bodrhyddan Estate waters, and is owned by the association with a mix of left and right bank. Spring Gardens and Roe Park are leased and take the fishing up to the A55 bridge, about 1,900m in all including Gypsy Lane. The City Beat is leased and runs from the A55 flyover up to the City road bridge on the left bank and much further on the right, which was extended upstream by about 500m in 2023. The association says both banks are mostly easy to reach with many holding places.
The Elwy is partly a spate river, rising and clearing quickly, and sea trout and salmon reach this stretch soon after they enter the Clwyd system. Booking is not required. Visitor tickets are £20 for one day or £80 for five days, bought online through the association’s website. There is parking at Gypsy Lane, at Spring Gardens Caravan Park and in the public car parks around St Asaph. The position shown is approximate.
