About River Dee, The Bathers
The Bathers is the club’s lowest beat, running from Bont Bridge, at the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, to between 150 and 300 metres below the railway viaduct, about 1.8 miles of double bank. On the left bank the run below Bont Bridge is good fly water for all species and the club calls the very deep, fast run under the aqueduct very good for salmon on the fly. Llyn Llewelyn is one of the biggest pools on the Dee: spinning is best at the head, the run off is good fly water, and the pool holds a large head of grayling. Llyn y Boat is good for salmon on the fly at the start and in the tail, and the whole pool is good for spinning.
Further down, the Long Meadow is very good for chub on maggot and worm, with salmon in the tail on fly and spinner. The run into the big bend is very good for salmon on the fly, the Dyke run is excellent, and there are three groynes below it that suit the fly and are excellent for spinning. Below the viaduct is a very deep pool, excellent for spinning with a tail that fishes well with the fly. The right bank is good for trout and grayling, with a good salmon fly run just below the aqueduct.
Maggots are allowed for coarse fish on this beat only, from 16 June to 1 March. The club’s tariff lists a trout and grayling day ticket at £25 and adult membership at £110. The position shown is approximate.
