About Wyebank
Wyebank is 300 yards of left bank fishing on the middle and lower Wye, in the village of Lydbrook between Ross on Wye and Monmouth. The Passport describes it as ideal for a few hours of salmon fly fishing for one rod, or a day of coarse fishing for one or two anglers.
Below the island the pace quickens into a long run known as the Wyebank run, where a number of cribs concentrate the water and give salmon their lies: the Wyebank crib, the lower crib and Boat Rock. Between the cribs is the Wharf Pool, a mid river hole with a smooth bedrock floor that the Passport calls excellent grilse water when conditions are right. Fly fishing for trout has improved in recent years, and all the trout are wild, with no stocking in this part of the Wye for many years. Grayling are sometimes present for autumn fishing.
The bank is well maintained, with parking nearby. For coarse anglers the flow is fast for this part of the river, so the barbel and dace fishing is particularly good, and chub can reach 5 or 6lb. Courtfield, just upstream, is bookable separately, and the two together suit a party of five or six anglers. Half price evening coarse tickets are sold from 5pm between May and September. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
