About River Usk, Pantyscallog
A secluded beat of one mile of right bank on the River Usk at Pantyscallog, which Llandovery Angling Association offers to its members only. It is not available on a day or week permit. The river here is small to medium sized and flows over red sandstone, with a waterfall at the upper end and a mixture of pools, fast runs, flats and deep gutters. The upper boundary is the confluence with its tributary the River Crai.
In line with Usk policy it is a fly only beat. Running between steep wooded banks, a short cast is enough on most of it, and the fast runs and deep gutters suit euro nymphing, while an 8 ft 6 in rod suits the dry fly. The association says red sandstone is slippery when wet and recommends felt soles, although the bank is mostly easy to fish from and wading is rarely necessary. The Usk here is noted for large trout, with fish up to 4 lb not uncommon, according to the association.
The association says the approach from the A40 is by a narrow road with a width limit of 6 ft 6 in, with room for two cars either side of a wooden gate.
