About fly fishing in Pembrokeshire
Fly fishing in Pembrokeshire is mostly for migratory fish, sea trout (sewin) and salmon, on two river systems, with two stillwaters alongside. Of the 9 waters we list, 3 are on the Cleddau, 4 are on the Nevern and 2 are stillwaters. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
The Cleddau is two rivers, the Western and the Eastern, that meet at Picton Point. Pembrokeshire Anglers Association owns and leases about 15 miles on the Western Cleddau and its tributaries, and has beats on the Eastern. Visitors can fish on day or weekly permits, £15 and £45 for an adult, from County Sports in Haverfordwest or online. The season runs from 1 April to 17 October, and from 8 October it is catch and release only, with no worm or prawn. The association’s main beat is also booked through the Fishing Passport, an online booking system run on a not for profit basis, and the Passport also sells The Bont, three quarters of a mile of single bank on the Eastern Cleddau with 22 lies and pools. For The Bont, the Passport describes a strong run of sea trout from mid May to mid September, then autumn salmon. At The Bont hooks must be barbless, the bag limit is one fish and salmon go back at all times. Ian Heaps Fishing Resort has the Holgan Farm mile of private salmon and sea trout fishing on the Eastern Cleddau at Llawhaden, near Narberth, at £10 to £20 a person a day, and you book through the fishery.
The Nevern is a spate river that rises in the Preseli hills and reaches the sea at Newport. Nevern Angling Association fishes four stretches: below Nevern Bridge, Penwaun, Felindre Farchog and Crosswell. An adult day permit (24 hours) is £30 and a week permit £60, sold at the Salutation Inn in Felindre Farchog and the Post Office in Newport. The club says sewin start to run in early May and peak in July, with salmon from August to the end of the season on 17 October. Night fly fishing for sewin is popular, and the Corner Pool and weir at Felindre Farchog is a well known night fishing spot. Worming is not permitted at Penwaun, Crosswell has a limit of four sewin a week and no dogs above the bridge, and a map comes with your permit.
There are two stillwaters. Llys-y-frân is a Welsh Water reservoir in the Preseli foothills, about 11 miles north east of Haverfordwest. It is stocked with rainbow trout and the operator says it is open all year. You can fish from the bank, where fly fishing and ledgered worm are permitted, or from an electric powered boat, where it is fly fishing only. Adult fish bag permits are £22 for 2 fish, £28 for 4 and £38 for 6. Foxhill Trout Fishery at Camrose, near Haverfordwest, is a spring fed fly fishery with depths of up to 40 feet, stocked with rainbow, blue, brown and spartic trout. It offers catch and release and catch and kill tickets, does not publish prices online, so ring ahead, and weekends need booking.
If you are visiting, the Pembrokeshire Anglers Association day permit on the Cleddau, a Nevern day permit and Llys-y-frân are the places to start.

Fish species in Pembrokeshire
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Pembrokeshire
The map above plots Pembrokeshire's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Nevern rises near Spring on the south west slope of Frenni Fawr, near Crymych, and the Eastern Cleddau rises near Blaencleddau, in the Preseli foothills near Mynachlog-ddu. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Pembrokeshire
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Pembrokeshire's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
