About fly fishing in Newport
Fly fishing in Newport, as we list it, means one water: the Ynys-y-fro Reservoirs, just outside the city. We list only part of the county, and only stillwaters there today. There are no rivers listed yet.
The reservoirs are two stocked trout lakes of 16 and 9 acres, managed by Newport Reservoirs Fly Fishing Association. The association stocks rainbow, brown, sparctic and tiger trout and describes plenty of fly life, with buzzers, sedges, silverhorns, damsels and cranefly. The water is open 365 days a year, and there are two boats on the lower reservoir for members and their guests.
Day tickets are bought in the hut, which has a self service card machine. A non-member ticket is £23 for one fish to take or £27 for two, and fishing must finish once your fish are dispatched. A junior ticket is £7. Each ticket allows up to 8 fish caught and released per reservoir, including the fish taken, and brown, sparctic and tiger trout must be returned.
The association’s rules are written for fly fishing, from 07:00 until 30 minutes after dusk, with barbless or squashed barb hooks and a long handled knotless landing net. It is one rod at a time, with no wading and no dogs. Sign in before you fish and record your catch afterwards. Its full rules are worth reading before you visit.

Fish species in Newport
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Newport
The map above plots Newport's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
