About fly fishing in Swansea
Fly fishing in Swansea is one reservoir and three rivers. Of the 4 waters we list, 1 is a reservoir, 1 is on the Tawe, 1 is on the Loughor and 1 is on the Lower Clydach. The rivers hold brown trout, sea trout (sewin) and salmon, and the reservoir holds brown and rainbow trout. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
Lower Lliw is a Welsh Water reservoir at Felindre, north of Swansea, fished by South Wales Fishing Society. Tickets are booked online in advance and none are sold on the bank. A pleasure day ticket is £12 with every fish returned. A catch and keep ticket is £25 for up to 3 trout or £35 for up to 5, and any fish over 5lb must be returned. Fishing is from 8am to 8pm. It is not a fly only water: the society also has rules for pike fishing with lures, spinners and dead bait. The fly rules limit hooks to size 10 long shank and a cast to four flies, with double taper or weight forward lines no heavier than AFTM10. There is no fishing from the dam wall or the boat launch pontoon. The society’s annual membership does not include Lower Lliw.
Pontardawe and Swansea Angling Society holds most of the Tawe between Ynysmeudwy and Morriston, and we list two of its waters. The Tawe beat is 2.5 km, mostly single bank, with seven named salmon pools, and it is booked through the Fishing Passport. Our listing shows no price for it, so check the Passport page. The Passport points to the afternoons in March, April and May for the best trout fishing, with March Browns, olives and sedges. No dogs are allowed, and the booking confirmation email is your ticket. The second water is the Lower Clydach River, from its confluence with the Tawe at Clydach up to the Lon Bridge. The club’s page gives those two limits and no length. A day permit is £10, from H R Jones in Clydach or online through the Passport, though the club’s page prints no year, so confirm the price. You need one rod, all salmon go back, and flies for salmon and sea trout must be barbless.
Pontarddulais and District Angling Association has about five miles of the Loughor, from the tidal water around Pontarddulais up towards Ammanford. The river marks the border with Carmarthenshire for much of its course. The Passport calls it narrow and winding between steep banks, known for large sewin and late season salmon. A 24 hour ticket, 7am to 7am, is £15, and night fishing is permitted. Trout run from 3 March to 30 September, and sewin and salmon from 20 March to 17 October, fly and spinner only, with permitted baits added for sewin from 15 April to 7 October. The same ticket also covers the association’s water on the Teifi.
For a first visit, Lower Lliw is the simplest to book, and a Loughor 24 hour ticket suits a night for sewin. On the Tawe and the Clydach, read the club rules first.

Fish species in Swansea
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Swansea
The map above plots Swansea's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the Lower Clydach River rises near Slopes of Mynydd y Betws and Banc Cwmhalen, and the River Loughor rises near Llygad Llwchwr, beneath the Black Mountain. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Swansea
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Swansea's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
