About fly fishing in Bridgend
Fly fishing in Bridgend is river fishing, for brown trout and grayling and for the sea trout (sewin) and salmon that run the Ogmore. Of the 10 waters we list, 1 is on the Llynfi and 9 are Ogmore Angling Association water: 5 on the Ogmore itself, 1 on the Ogwr Fawr, 1 on the Ogwr Fach and 2 on the Ewenny. No stillwater is listed. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
Ogmore Angling Association was formed in 1891 and controls around 14 miles of water on the Ogmore and the rivers that feed it. The Wild Trout Trust calls the Ogmore a classic south Wales spate river, and rain changes it quickly, so watch the levels. Our listings run up the river from the sea. The lowest beat goes from the mouth to Merthyr Mawr, where the tidal water holds bass, mullet and flounder as well as the migratory fish. Above it, the river passes through Bridgend from Dipping Bridge to the Quarella railway bridge, with twenty named pools by the club’s count, then on under the M4 to Brynmenyn and up to Blackmill. At Blackmill the Ogwr Fawr and the Ogwr Fach meet to form the Ogmore. The club also has the Ogwr Fawr up to Ogmore Vale, a smaller river than the Ogmore below it, and a length of the Ogwr Fach at the junction.
Non-members can fish all of this except the Private Stretch on a day ticket at £20 or a week ticket at £65 (seven consecutive days), one rod, valid from 1 April to 30 September. They are sold online or from three tackle shops the club names. Every fish is returned, hooks are barbless and a landing net must be carried. Spinning and natural bait are allowed on most of the water, with no maggots or Powerbait. The trout season runs from 3 March to 30 September, and salmon and sewin from 20 March to 17 October. After 30 September only members with a Salmon and Migratory Trout licence may fish the Ogmore, and only for salmon or sewin.
The Private Stretch at Merthyr Mawr is for adult members, who book a slot through the club’s Clubmate page. Adult membership for the 2026 season is £100 with a £100 joining fee, and there is a waiting list for adult and concession members.
The Ewenny is a different river. The club calls it unstocked, with wild brown trout and grayling, and the water is alkaline with a strong base flow, so it holds up better in dry spells than the Ogmore. We list two Ewenny beats, one from Keepers Lodge Bridge to Waterton beside the industrial estates on the edge of Bridgend, and one higher up, from the Brocastle Avenue area to the Moores boundary. Upstream of the A48 bridge it is fly only, and wading is allowed only from 16 June to 30 September. The same day and week tickets cover it in summer. Winter grayling fishing, from 1 October to 14 March, needs a separate permit that adult members buy when they renew.
The Llynfi is the other river we list, held by Llynfi Valley Angling Association, which was established in 1954. It has around ten miles of river from north of Maesteg down to the Ogmore at Aberkenfig, fished from the bank or by wading, and the river is mainly brown trout. The season runs from 3 March to 30 September, with spinning allowed only from 1 July. Membership for 2026 is £50 for seniors, £30 for over 65s who have held a senior membership for a year and £5 for juniors. The club sells day passes through Clubmate, but we have no price for them, so ask the club.
If you are visiting for a day, start with the Ogmore day ticket through Bridgend, or the Ewenny in summer for wild fish on the fly.

Grayling proper
Trout fishing is finished and the winter fishery has started. Grayling are wild fish here, never stocked, and they feed well through the cold. Prices drop sharply once the trout season closes.

Fish species in Bridgend
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Bridgend
The map above plots Bridgend's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Ogmore rises near Craig Ogwr, Ogmore Valley (as the Ogwr Fawr), and the River Ewenny rises near High ground north of Pencoed, where the Ewenny Fawr and Ewenny Fach rise. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
