About fly fishing in Caerphilly
Fly fishing in Caerphilly is small river fishing in the South Wales valleys, for wild brown trout on the Ebbw and Sirhowy and for brown trout and grayling on the Rhymney, with two stillwaters run by the same club. Of the 8 waters we list, 1 is on the Ebbw, 1 is on the Sirhowy, 4 are on the Rhymney and 2 are stillwaters. We list only part of the county, and each water has its own rules, tickets and season, so check the page for the one you plan to fish. A Natural Resources Wales rod licence is needed.
Islwyn and District Anglers holds the Ebbw and Sirhowy, and Rhymney water too. The Ebbw is known as a wild brown trout river, one of the best in Wales for numbers, with trout averaging close to a pound. The Sirhowy is smaller, with deep pools and root lined runs, mostly trout of 8 to 12 inches and the occasional fish of two pounds or more, and it is quick to clear after a spate. The club’s 2026 river day ticket is £17, sold on its website or at Green’s Fishing Tackle in Pontllanfraith, and one ticket covers the Ebbw, Sirhowy and Rhymney. The river season is 3 March to 30 September. All river fishing is catch and release, a landing net is compulsory, and the club’s North water allows worm as well as fly, while the South water is fly only. The club does not publish the limits of its river water, so the positions we show are approximate.
The club’s two stillwaters are Pen-y-fan Pond at Oakdale, a canal feeder reservoir, and Pant-yr-Eos Reservoir at Risca. Both are fly only from the bank, with no boats, at £22 for a two fish day ticket. Fish you keep must be over 12 inches and all brown trout go back. At Pant-yr-Eos there is no wading, as the banks are steep and the water deep, and no fishing before 7am.
The Rhymney is a 30 mile river that is now much cleaner than it was in the coal years, with a healthy stock of grayling and natural brown trout. Royal Oak Angling Club at Ystrad Mynach fishes the middle river, and we list three of its waters: Tiryberth, Ystrad Mynach around Royal Oak Bridge, and Llanbradach, which the club describes as eight beats. You may take up to two brown trout of 13 inches or more in a session, and salmon and sea trout (sewin) must be returned. Many beats are not signed, and the club sends maps. Its site shows no current prices, so ask before you buy. Caerphilly and District Angling Association has Rhymney water around the town, with grayling it says come close to 3lb. All of it is catch and release, and day tickets are booked on its Clubmate page. Its website shows no prices.
For a first day, the Islwyn river ticket is the clearest place to start, as the price and rules are published.

Fish species in Caerphilly
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Caerphilly
The map above plots Caerphilly's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Rhymney rises near Near Rhymney, on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons, and the Ebbw River rises near Near Ebbw Vale. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
