About fly fishing in Suffolk
Suffolk’s fly fishing on FishingBeats is one day permit fishery, a members’ lake and a river society with a waiting list.
South Elmham Lakes at St Nicholas South Elmham, on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, is the one place to buy a day permit. It has three lakes, Frog Hall, Old Hall and Crabtree, stocked with rainbows and browns. Fishing is fly only on barbless hooks, from dawn to dusk. A day permit lets you take up to three stock rainbows, and all brown trout and all rainbows over 3lb are released. Permits are bought online before you fish.
Suffolk Fly Fishers Club has a private 30 acre lake between Ipswich and Felixstowe, open every day of the year from dawn to sunset. It is members only with no day tickets. The fee shown for 2025/26 is £460 with a one-off £100 joining fee. Members may bring a guest for £25 a day, and a newcomer can try the lake on a free trial day.
The Lark Angling and Preservation Society fishes wild and stocked brown trout on the River Lark, which rises in a band of chalk south of Bury St Edmunds. The trout section is members only and full, with a waiting list. Its bye-laws set a trout close season from 29 October to 1 April, and no trout under 12 inches may be taken.

Fish species in Suffolk
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Suffolk
The map above plots Suffolk's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
