About fly fishing in Essex
Essex has no trout river on FishingBeats, so the county’s fly fishing is all stillwater. Two waters sell day tickets, and the rest are members’ lakes, a syndicate and two fly clubs.
Chigborough Farm and Fisheries, on the edge of Maldon, has two lakes, Home Water and Rook Hall, about 30 acres between them and stocked monthly. The trout season runs from 1 November to the end of June. Tickets are booked online in advance, there is no membership, and you can fish both lakes on the day. Hanningfield Reservoir at West Hanningfield, near Chelmsford, is run by Waterside Parks as an any method rainbow trout fishery, fished from the dam, the bank or one of 36 boats. Day permits and boats are booked through Bookwhen, and only rainbows may be kept.
Norton Fishery in the Roding Valley, near Epping, is a five acre lake and strictly members only, with tickets paid for in person. Thornwood Springs, on the edge of Epping Forest, is also members only, with annual, summer and winter memberships, and non-members can fish once a year on a regular ticket plus a supplement paid on the day. The Sticking Hill Fly Fishing Syndicate has an 8.5 acre reservoir at Orsett, in Thurrock, open 1 March to 31 October. Members take two fish a day and release the rest, and you join through the Essex Country Sports office.
Essex Fly Fishers’ Club fishes Lodge Lake and Lavender Lake, about 16 acres each, near Great Leighs. The 2027 subscription is £645 with a £30 joining fee, and new members join from a waiting list. Causeway Fly Fishers, near Saffron Walden, is capped at 35 members on a four acre lake and occasionally has vacancies. It offers a taster session with a member before you join.

Fish species in Essex
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Essex
The map above plots Essex's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Essex
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Essex's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
